Just for Fun by zazB Just for Fun by zazB
Short version: See picture title.

Long version: As some of you might know, I really want to do a webcomic. The problem is, I'm not a writer. So I have been reading on the subject and writing down all my ideas. Things are progressing and I'm working on two stories, trying to work out which one I should concentrate on.
However, all that writing made me want to draw something. I took my two story concepts and made a quick illustration for each of them. Everything in there is subject to change; designs, art styles and especially the titles.

The coloring and patterns/clothes look very intriguing on Among the Waves. I'd certainly want to hear more about that.

If I can make a writing suggestion a book I always recoomend is Stephen King's On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft. In ten years this has been the best book on writing I've encountered. Comics is probably a bit different, but itcovers teh basic and is an enjoyable read besides, upped my game at least 50% more. Good luck!

Thanks for your suggestion :)
I'll look into it. I read a couple of books on the subject and I just watched Brandon Sanderson's classes on youtube (I recommend you check those if you are interested by that and haven't already)

You're welcome. I've been told by those in the know that these two books are great for writing comics.

I'll look up Sanderson, thanks. Peace.

My two cents; Do it in self contained short story arcs that may or may not have anything to do with an over all encompassing story,Think of your ending first then think how you got there. Have friends give the speech patterns for some of your characters. Believe in your work, Marine already has a fan base and after awhile these characters from out of the blue will start to write themselves.

Thank you for your two cents :)
The second idea (the Empire of Evil) is in short but interconnected stories. I think I should try something like that for the first one too, because it seems to work better.
I did not realize that people cared about Marine and it's yet another reason that I do not drop this project for the other. I know there is something worth telling in there, but I don't know how to tell it yet.
On the other hand, if I choose the Empire of Evil, it only means that I will probably do the other one after it and it will surely be better by then :)

That's awesome!! Haha I don't even know what to say, only that I'm always excited to see people telling their own stories, I don't think we can have enough storytellers in the world. Good luck with the writing - it's tough, but the best approach is to just do it and eventually it comes together. I love these two pieces, and I'm excited to see which story you settle on.

Hey thanks for the link, I didn't know about that. The worst Is that I thought about changing the title for A Kingdom of Evil.
I'm sure I'll come up with a better title when the story will be done :)

Yes, I think the best names for stories usually emerge when you finish and realize exactly what the story was about all along.
Anyway, my offer to help stands.

There's a potential for real good webcomics . Hope they're gonna work out :D.

You know, what helps even more than reading on the subject is reading the subject. Read a few webcomics, see different ways authors deal with action and plot. Obviously Sluggy Freelance is a must but of course there are thousands webcomics to learn from on the web.

I'm in opposite situation - I'd love to make a webcomic, but my artistic skills are similiar to those of a rubber hammer . So I settled down for an webnovel . Novel has its unique perks distinguishing it from more visual medias, but clearly comic is more universal medium, which can exploit both literature's and drawings' advantages without their disadvantages. Such a wonderful art :happycry:.

I read webcomics, but I,m pretty picky =P
I also don't want to read too many of them, because I find it harder to come up with my own ideas if I have seen too much of everyone else's work.

Ooo, Among the Waves looks really interesting. More so than the other one only because I can see the character more clearly and that is what usually really pulls me into the story the most. but the second one looks like it could be really cool as well!

Try to write any way, you have all that stuff in your head, and you just must tell the story as it goes :D

I tried this way a lot of times and it didn't quite worked out for me. I'm more efficient if I design everything based on a solid story. I also think, people will notice if I put a lot of effort in the story :)

I pitched the stories in a synopsis version to some friends and the verdict always is that the concept for An Empire of Evil is a lot stronger. But I like Marine so I'm trying to make the story better so it actually is interesting. If it doesn't work I'll just go with the other option.
And I'm really glad you like Marine too :)

I think you are awesome and since I know Marine and I think her design is cool maybe I would vote for that! I don't know since both ideas look awesome and I am sure that whatever you decide It would be great!

btw maybe you should do a poll :O It would be easier to count the votes!

Good idea! I'll probably do a poll when the stories are finished. I will continue posting concepts and such, so people can make a choice based on what they see, instead of vague temporary concepts like these two.

You're the only artist I actually *follow* on dA. I've been looking forward to seeing Marine's story for a while now.

My advice: don't worry about the writing, just start doing it. Commit yourself to putting out X pages over a month's time, and do it. At the end of the month, evaluate your work, figure out what works, decide what to fix. Then do it again.

Frankly, your style is so expressive and easy to follow that I think you could put out a webcomic with no words at all and it would still be compelling.

Lastly, find some people you admire and ask them for their opinion on your planned story. Neil Gaiman probably won't write back to you, but I bet there are some people in your life or less successful authors who could give you the support and advice you need to push forward.

Even if I don't choose that story for now, I'll continue working on the character for another time.

As for the writing, the thing is, I want to worry about it =P
I want to be proud of all the parts of the final product. What I don't want is for people to say: the art is good, but I don't really care about the story.
