The Sardaukar by zazB The Sardaukar by zazB
The sardaukar, the army of the emperor in the Dune novels. I'm a fan of Dune and I love those guys (they're like Stormtroopers who can shoot... how amazing is that!) A part of my soul died when I saw what they looked like in the Sci-fi Channel mini-serie. Purple dudes wearing giant berets...

It's pretty sketchy but at least, there are no giant berets to be seen! Hope you like, even if you never read Dune :)

Christopher Nolan needs to direct a dune movie. Couldn't think of a better director.

They Looked pretty ridiculous in the film too, hell everything looked weird in the movie.
Your drawing however, this is how they should look. Good job man!

Like others have said both '84 movie and Sci-fi Channel mini-series went way off with the Sardaukar costumes...but I believe the mini-series was going for some kind of noveau-Renaissance look as opposed to elite, hard-core troopers. Of course, I have my own picture in my head from the novels, but I like your interpretation - nicely done!

Funny thing is, I don't see them this way either. I did it that way back then for fun, but I always pictured the sardaukars looking more like Napoleonian Dragoons.

Ah, yes. I read the series years ago. One of my favorite series. I especially like the Heretics of Dune series, which featured Duncan Idaho thousands of years after the death of The God Emporer. Needless to say, Idaho had been cloned many thousands of times by the Sisters. Did you have a chance to read those sequels? They are so intense. They make the fist four books feel tame by comparison. Sex, Spice and Rock-and-Roll to the max!

Excellent illustration. Faving and Watching. :~}

Yup I read them! The whole Dune series by Frank Herbert is excellent. The ending they wrote a couple of years ago was such a let down however :(

And thanks for the Fav and watch :)

I skipped the books by Herbert's son. I heard that they were far inferior to those written by Frank Herbert. Your assessment is by no means unique among Dune cycle devotees. My pleasure, concerning your latter comment.

Oops! Forgot to mention, I was turned onto this piece by our bud Ubbergeek. :D
theubbergeek2 Featured By Owner Jan 11, 2012
ACtually, they had epic costumes in that serie - it was agood point of it, showing how Duneverse is a cultural mishmash...

Freemen are arabs, the Padishah is a PERSIAN title, Harkonen is based ona finnish name...

I always picture them as very sharp suited soldiers.... almost like the Nazi SS. But not in black, in blue, similar to the blue colour worn by Irulan.

I like your take on them though... much better than those guys who look a little like the UN troops!

Not scary

I don't remember why I drew them like this back then. I think I always imagined them in uniform resembling Dragoon cavalry. I may have been in a more sci-fi mood at the time :)

Sardaukar have always been made to look boring somehow. Or when not boring, they've been made to look silly.
TranscendentalRain Featured By Owner Jul 6, 2011
I always love new visions of Dune. I'm glad people don't get stuck on the same old imagery, no matter what that imagery happens to be. Herbert left a lot up to the reader, which makes it fun to revisit the books and imagine things differently :)

I love the vertical architecture here. Feels very Far Future. :)

"They're like stormtroopers who can shoot" :XD:

Anyway I find it extremely befitting, I like how you imagined their uniforms

good for you! nice Lasguns! I rather like your armor designs, the helmets in particular.

love the pic! though don't you think they look a little bit like the guys in Halo? (yes im a nerd i know)

I liked their dress uniforms in the 1984 movie. Black and gold with the star clusters at the collar and shoulders. That actually looked pretty believable. I don't like the look of the new version, to much fantasy and not enough sci-fi.
zazB Featured By Owner Nov 22, 2010
Yes the dress uniform was really nice! For some reason I always pictured sardaukars like dragoons. (real world ones, not final fantasy ones :))
writermartin42 Featured By Owner Nov 22, 2010  Professional Writer
Yeah I know. If the new version shows them in berets I hope it's the kind that would go with those uniforms, like black or scarlet.

What I'd really like to see is a true demonstration of military might on the part of the Great Houses. Tanks and vehicles, not just infantry, 'thopters and a few sandworms.

It got worse during the Emperor, Battle for Dune game. They were worthless!
Von-Krupp Featured By Owner Jun 16, 2010
Personally, I prefer everything in the miniseries to the old movie, but it appears that I'm in the minority. I'm doubtful that they'll find an actor who visually suits the role of Muad'dib better than Alec Newman did. I *know* that they won't find a better actor for the Baron Harkonen than Ian McNeice. Hell, I think the worst acting was done by whoever played Lady Jessica (can't be bothered to look her up at the moment) was so transparent.

I do like your interpretation of the Sardaukar up until the guns, but I'm being nit-picky. :p

LOL I'm so happy I've never seen any Dune movie!
Sliversun Featured By Owner Apr 4, 2010
Yeah, I thought the Sardaukar uniforms sucked in the mini-series too. But you're pic is awesome! If they do a movie remake of Dune, you should send them this!

Please do more Dune art!
zazB Featured By Owner Apr 4, 2010
They are making a remake of Dune. But with the director's resume, I fear what it will en up like. One day, people in Hollywood will understand that Dune is a drama, political/ecological commentary set in space and not a summer blockbuster... I hope.
crimson-galley Featured By Owner Jan 3, 2010
Nice guns :-)

oh, and concerning the miniseries sardaukars..they have got a landsknecht-like outfit. I guess it is because the filmmakers wanted famous Theodor Pistek to design the costumes. But he doesn´t like SCI-FI, so they told him to imagine he´s designing costumes for some Shakespearian drama located in future. :-)
zazB Featured By Owner Jan 3, 2010
I saw some of the concepts and they look great on paper, or at least better than the final real thing costume. Maybe it could have worked on a bigger production movie. Or it's the kind of things that only work in concept art =P

I love the detail on the rifles. And the frigates in the background are pretty cool, too. The structure they're standing in must be huge!

And for the record, I thought Lynch's rad-suited Sardaukar were pretty cool.

Scif-Fi channel is a perfect example of why to never remake a classic. Though I like some of their original series. Sanctuary is a current favorite. BUT back to the art now. Completely phenomenal

Man! I'm know how you feel. I´m also a big fan of the novels and I was very dissapointed with the movie and the series' portrait of them. Excelent job

Now thats a true soldier right there! Far better than the easily-killable purple fags we got in the movie... You really do them justice in this pic :)
Karlika Featured By Owner Aug 26, 2009  Professional General Artist
Yeah, what was with that?

They're elite soldiers and you give them big floppy berets? Their Harkonnen gear was alot better though.

Nice work, by the way.
shine2rust Featured By Owner Aug 12, 2009
I don't think I've seen the sf channel miniseries, but I always imagined the Sardaukars as wearing black uniforms AND berrets. Maybe even fluffy pants and all, Swiss guard style. To me at least, your stormtrooper-like portrayal seems cliched and immature.

While I may not agree with the WAY you made them look, kudos on the hard work and final quality of the image!
zazB Featured By Owner Aug 12, 2009
Well it's a bit old, and I agree with you. If I had to redo it, I would make them look like dragoons from the Napoleon era, more than futurist soldiers.
ninjajib Featured By Owner May 2, 2009
awesome pic. really puts a new look on the sardaukar, because if you watch the miniseries first that image sticks in your head... i cried on the inside. but they didnt mess up on the brutality of the sardaukar in the miniseries, best portrayed when they knifed the baby.

These are the coolest sardaukar I have ever seen! I read the Dune books as the main reason to read them, the second is the Harkonnens. The Sardaukar are the coolest warriors of all the books, can beat any one down, and those savage Fremen are second best! LONG LIVE THE PADISHA EMPEROR CORRINO SHADAM THE FOURTH!!!
